Former Maryland star throwing 'bows

It's an awfully slow news day. Can you tell?

I've shared my kidding-but-not-really thoughts on the WNBA before, and one of my gripes is that the sport is less athletic, less physical and therefore less exciting than the men's game.

Well, Los Angeles Sparks guard Kristi Toliver -- of Maryland's 2006 NCAA Tournament Championship team -- made headlines with an elbow to the face of Phoenix Mercury guard Ketia Swanier.

The result was Swanier writhing around on the court and eventually getting carried off. But not before losing about a pint of O-negative blood in the process. It didn't matter, though, as the Mercury rallied behind their fallen teammate to win 101-82.

Like I said earlier in the week in my UFC versus boxing post, it seems that all sports could use a little more violence. Enjoy your weekend.
